Questions You Asked!

Here I shall be answering questions regarding NIT-Trichy asked by friends and visitors. Most of the questions are by students aspiring to join as freshers in NIT Trichy. Hope this will be helpful!

Q. Are first year students allowed to bring phones and laptops? -Pranav P Chheda

A. Yes, you can bring phones and laptops. You can have them in your hostels. But you shouldn’t bring your mobile phones to the Lecture Halls or Practical Laboratories. Also, it is adviced that you bring laptops and desktops in your second semester after you have found the campus comfortable. Because in my first year, there had been cases of thefts in the hostels.

Please take care of your properties.

Q. What is the college timings?

A. The college timing is from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm. With lunch break from 12.10 pm to 1.30 pm. This doesn’t mean that you will be engaged through out. The time table is flexible and can be modified to the comfort of the students and the teachers. You can have free hours during the academic hours. However do ensure that you do not exploit the freedom too much. Each period runs for 40 minutes.

Q. Is there a shopping center at NIT Trichy?

A. Yes, there is a mini shopping center at NIT Trichy, with essential day to day commodities. There is also a Gurunath outlet that caters to stationaries and electronic goods (pen drives, head phones, hard disks etc).

Q. The campus being very large are bikes allowed for students?

-Vinod

A. Let’s get this clear. You are permitted to own a bicycle in the campus. However you might seldom use it, as first year hostels are very very close to the Central Lecture Hall Complex. And about motor cycles, you can do away with it. The campus isn’t very large, and facilities like computer lab, library are just a walk away. I would suggest you to have a bicycle rather than a motorcycle.

A piece of advice from experience: Not everyone will be owning a bicycle and you will soon be finding yourself lending your bicycle to your new friends. This might result in your bicycle not available to you when you need it, and frequent wearing out and visits to the bicycle repair shop. :D

Q. How to get more grade points?

-Vinod

A. Purely academic question. Your grade point depends on how you perform academically in your cycle tests (two of them every semester) and the final semester examination. Also important is the assignments provided to you. Don’t slog, even if your aim is a ten point. Perform really well in your cycle tests (CT). CTs are one hour examination, with a part of the syllabus. The syllabus for the CT is jointly decided by the student representative and teachers. If you have performed really well in CTs and have reasonable marks in assignments (it’s usually a copy paste or a group effort :D ), then the load on you for your semester exams will be less, and you will have time for every thing!

Q. Please let me know about the overall aspect of Civic Amenties and Sanitation.

A. I believe you want to know about the hostel facilities, shops etc. I believe I have mentioned it in the article. Well I am glad to put it down again. For first years, there will be three hostels (Agate, Coral and Diamond). And mostly it will be three (or four) in a room. There are enough toilets and there is also Water Doctor (normal and cold water) installed within the hostels. The mess food is hygienic but rarely delicious. We love the food from the Dhabhas outside, but hygiene is a question there (which we rarely care!). The first years hostels (for the fear of getting ragged) are isolated (using fence). For the first few months, first years aren’t permitted to leave that campus after 9 (or 10 pm). Seniors are not permitted within that Campus. Also there is a Gurunath outlet within this area (behind Coral). Come to the campus and discover. There is a Hospital with essential facilities and also Ambulance service if there is a dire need to direct the patient to BHEL hospital. Good Sports Center and Swimming Pool, Basketball courts, Playgrounds etc. Everything is there in the Campus. Come and Enjoy!

Q. Do we get hot water for taking bath?

A. Yes, there is the facility to provide hot water. The water is heated using solar panels. It was there when I was in first year (2007-08). Am not sure if the facility is still available. This facility is available only in the first year hostels Agate, Coral and Diamond. Sometimes the hot water supply might be disrupted and not available on demand. Well, from my own experience most students after coming to the hostels, stop such habits (like taking a bath everyday). And you might very well get adapted to using cold water too! Also there isn’t hot water outlets in each bathroom. A single outlet. You have to collect it and use it as required.

Q. When is the sports time?

A. There is NO particular sports time like in schools. 0830 to 1700 hrs is for academics. You might not be engaged during this entire period. You will definitely have free periods in between. You can use the football, hockey grounds in the mornings or evenings whenever you please. The gym timings is from 1700 to 1900 hrs. Swimming Pool is open for Girls in the morning from 0600 to 0800 (not sure about that) and for boys in the evening. You are permitted to visit the swimming pool based on a shift. To visit the Swimming Pool there are some formalities, however there aren’t any for Gym. In sports center there is also facility for badminton and carroms players too. [Sports Center is open from 1700 to 1900 hrs.]

Q.[All questions from Venky.B who is joining EEE in NIT Trichy. Entering NITT in 2009]

1. Which is the best mess? And can we cook in our hostel rooms(not allowed according to rules, of course)?

A. O Mess probably. And the Mega Mess which is nearing completion now, look really good. If you are asking about the food, well I have already mentioned that, the food ain’t good on all days. Some days, if you are lucky to get a good bunch of cooks, the food will be good. [O Mess is mess for Girls by the way.]

Also, you can’t ‘choose’ to eat from any mess. First years have to dine only at ‘A Mess’ which is closer to the First Year’s hostels.

You are not supposed to break rules. You should not cook in hostel rooms. Well, we used to make Maggi Noodles at mid night, when we feel hungry. Since first years are not permitted to leave their hostels after 10pm, hence we couldn’t visit the night stalls for food, and had to make food if we hadn’t stock food. Follow or Break the rules as you wish.
2. Is there ragging, and how to escape it?

NIT Trichy campus is an entirely ragging ‘FREE’ campus. When there is no ragging, there is no need to escape it.

3. How to prepare for IITJEE in NIT-T? Will there be atleast some guys with me preparing for it? Is it possible to manage both college and JEE preparation, and how to schedule hours of study?

A. When in NIT Trichy, you may use your time to study the college syllabus or for IIT JEE. You might even find resources in the Library for the same. The best is to bring your own books and notes for studying. Yes, most likely there will be many more guys preparing for it. Managing both college and JEE preparation depends on the individual. I couldn’t, so I gave college more importance rather than IIT JEE. (Another reason was that I found NITT more suitable for me.) I suggest you spend your holiday time after the first semester, to complete preparation for JEE. Then you will not be stressed during your second semester.

If you are serious about IITJEE, then slog like in hell in your first year. Shun all other activities and just sit and slog. Don’t participate in any college activity like Festember, Pragyan and NITTFEST. Just slog.

is it tough for a general category candidate to get admission there??
  • No it is not! Please keep such doubts away and attempt the paper with full confidence in you!

I am a state BORED student in chennai.... am really and firmly determined to join NIT T... it's my place of dreams. am presently in 12th. not goin for any coaching. but i am strong in concepts and will attend a crash course at the end.. how much shld i score to make it there?
  • Hey! It's great to know that you are aiming NIT Trichy. It's a great place. If you are confident of getting through, then am sure you will make it. Don't settle for the minimum necessary score. Try to get really good scores. That will let you choose the branch of your choice. Cause that's important too. So try to get the maximum score possible. I am not very sure of the scores now. Keeps changing every time. Try not to go below 50 percent. Aim for above 60 percent

im doin my 11th in cbse..chennai...managed to get 90 percent in my boards...how will aieee be....easy or tough??i currently go for iit coaching.......my sir keeps telling aieee is a cakewalk if you prepare well for iit.....is it true.......i am really interested in joinning nitt......i am not that interested in joining iit coz i just hate nerds...i cant stand em.....man uve hard theyll rip your ballls apart in iit......so gimme some extra tips to get an admission in nitt
  • It's interesting to know this. Want NIT don't want IIT. And I appreciate your desire wanting to join NIT Trichy. It's a great place, am enjoying every minute of it. (Of course some things suck (mess food, internet speeds, no internet in rooms), but its ok.)
And nerds are everywhere. Be sure not to become one.
About preparation. Yes, AIEEE will seem easy, if you master IIT JEE type questions. IIT JEE questions are dipped in fundamentals, and you need to get it right, and that's good too. You are in 11th you say now. Enough time, spend safe. Aim at the highest point you can aim, IIT, don't settle for anything else. Secure good ranks in both. Decide about going for which one later on.

Wherever you go, you need to have rock solid fundamentals in everything you learnt in school. No excuses.

Good luck and all the best!
