Frequently Asked Questions – Answers to Questions by Visitors!
Hi friend! Are you someone keen on being a part of the NIT-T Campus? Do you want to know more about NIT Trichy, the facilities, the environment in and around the campus. Well, then I believe, this page will give you information enough to get you started. You can find “some” details in the official website on National Institute of Technology, Trichy. You will find first hand information about the campus in these pages. Please note that the college is not situated in the city. It is situated at a place called Thuvakudi, which is an hour or so drive from the city.
What’s the First thing you would like to know?
HOSTEL AND MESS
|
|
|
Of these fourteen hostels, there was news of ‘four’ hostels being provided for the first years (Boys), this time. For girls, there is Opal A, B and C. Hostel details for Girls aren’t available at the moment. Most probably for boys, the hostels will be Agate, Coral, Diamond and Beryl. Beryl was a PG and second years hostel, I myself stayed there last academic year. The hostel facilities are “OK” and manageable. We saw it just as a place to sleep or sometimes study. Your room mates will be decided in random, however there shall be some flexibility wherein you can talk to the respective warden to change your rooms, citing seemingly genuine reasons.
Neither Air Conditioning nor Internet/Intranet connections are available in the hostels. Also there might be power cuts or unavailability of water. But at present such problems have minimised. There is a daily power cut from morning 8 to 10. It is expected to be continued in the next semester too.
Coming to Mess food, please do not expect it to be ‘very’ delicious. It should be consumable, though some days it might be worst. There shall be special food that can be ordered and the cost shall be deducted from the mess bills.
ACADEMICS
Irrespective of the course you have selected or admitted into, the same syllabus is followed in the first year. But since 2008, branch specific courses have been introduced, so that the students find it comfortable when coming to the department from the second year. Please note that this is only for the engineering students and not the architecture students. There will be a post exclusively for architecture students soon in my blog.

In NIT-Trichy, semester pattern is followed. So there is an end semester exam, at the end of a semester. Also for continuous assessment, there are Cycle tests every month and also Assignments/Projects. [A piece of advice: The portion for cycle tests will be a part of the entire syllabus. Scoring in Cycle tests, have proven to be a boost for you Grade Point Average. More about Grade Point Average later.]
Requisites when coming to the campus. Lab Uniforms (Khakhi Shirt and Pant, for both Boys and Girls). There is provision for it to be stitched in the campus itself. Lab Shoes (Black Shoes, not Sports shoes). Not available in campus. Can be bought from the city.

Also required for engineering drawing (which I am not sure is present for the 2009 batch) we will need drafter, instrument box, chart holder etc. The preferred calculator is Casio 991 MS or Casio 991 ES. These can be obtained from the campus or can be obtained at second hand rate from the seniors.
For purchases, a place called Chatram is preferred to the city, as there are umpteen number of book stalls, stationery, etc. It’s about half an hour by bus from the college.
For the first year students (engineering), who will be split among 10 (not sure of the number) sections, shall have their classes at the Central Lecture Hall Complex and not in their departments. Students of Architecture will have their classes at their Department. The preferred dress code is Shirts and Pants for Boys and Salwaar Kameez (ask girl seniors please!) for girls. The “Code of Conduct” is available in the Official Website for Download. The link to the college rules is here. I do not know how strict the officials are now, but I don’t remember following the rules, especially the dress code, for more than a week or so.
For extra curricular activities, it is mandatory for the student to join either National Cadets Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS) or NSO (National Service Organisation). Please bring your sports certificates if you are keen to join NSO.
INTERNET AND LIBRARY

For facilities available on the LAN we have the Intranet Lab, called Octagon. For internet facilities there is the separate annex building. Entry requires ID card and also you log-in details, which might be made available to you in a month or so. Same goes with usage of computers at Octagon. There is at present a Library with greater density of Academics book. Internet access is available in Library too, but the number of computers is less. There is a Central Library under construction. Hope it is completed in time. (It’s time of completion was expected to be February 2008). There is also a Sports Center and Gymkhana.
CLUBS AND ASSOCIATIONS
There are umpteen number of Clubs and Associations formed by seniors and which are kept alive by inducting new members every year. At present, inductions for First Years are not permitted. And inductions shall be only in the second year. Some of the clubs in the campus are Rotaract Club, Wisdom Club, Leo Club, Dance Troupe of NITT, Music Troupe of NITT, Aayaam the Hindi Literary club, Tamil Mandram the Tamil Literary Club, Technical clubs like Delta, Spider and RMI – Robotics and Machine Intelligence. There is also a Karate Club.
RELIEF
We find relief and solace from the mess food and the sometimes maddening routine thanks to Icy the ice cream par lour, Juicy the juicy shop and Snacky the snacks shop. There is also a Buhari Veg and Non-Veg Canteen, a Shopping Centre, SBI Bank and ATM, Xerox shop, Stationery, Gurunath – a mini market catering to all essential Goodies. Gurunath is located behind the Coral Hostel, while the remaining are located closer to the staff quarters. And I shouldn’t leave out the Nescafe and Bru shops that are functional at Night and Day respectively.
First year boys are expected to be back in their hostels latest by 9.30 pm while Girls of all years are expected to be in their hostels before 9 pm. Delay will not be entertained. The time is extended to 10 pm on Saturday. (Last semester the time was 9 pm on Saturday, and 8 pm for the rest of the days.)
