Frequently Asked Questions – Answers to Questions by Visitors!

Hi friend! Are you someone keen on being a part of the NIT-T Campus? Do you want to know more about NIT Trichy, the facilities, the environment in and around the campus. Well, then I believe, this page will give you information enough to get you started. You can find “some” details in the official website on National Institute of Technology, Trichy. You will find first hand information about the campus in these pages. Please note that the college is not situated in the city. It is situated at a place called Thuvakudi, which is an hour or so drive from the city.

What’s the First thing you would like to know?

HOSTEL AND MESS

  • Agate
  • Beryl
  • Coral
  • Diamond
  • Emerald
  • Garnet A
  • Garnet B
  • Jade
  • Lapis
  • Opal (Girls)
  • Pearl
  • Ruby
  • Sapphire
  • Topaz
  • Zircon (under construction)

Of these fourteen hostels, there was news of ‘four’ hostels being provided for the first years (Boys), this time. For girls, there is Opal A, B and C. Hostel details for Girls aren’t available at the moment. Most probably for boys, the hostels will be Agate, Coral, Diamond and Beryl. Beryl was a PG and second years hostel, I myself stayed there last academic year. The hostel facilities are “OK” and manageable. We saw it just as a place to sleep or sometimes study. Your room mates will be decided in random, however there shall be some flexibility wherein you can talk to the respective warden to change your rooms, citing seemingly genuine reasons.

Neither Air Conditioning nor Internet/Intranet connections are available in the hostels. Also there might be power cuts or unavailability of water. But at present such problems have minimised. There is a daily power cut from morning 8 to 10. It is expected to be continued in the next semester too.

Coming to Mess food, please do not expect it to be ‘very’ delicious. It should be consumable, though some days it might be worst. There shall be special food that can be ordered and the cost shall be deducted from the mess bills.

ACADEMICS

Irrespective of the course you have selected or admitted into, the same syllabus is followed in the first year. But since 2008, branch specific courses have been introduced, so that the students find it comfortable when coming to the department from the second year. Please note that this is only for the engineering students and not the architecture students. There will be a post exclusively for architecture students soon in my blog.

Central Lecture Hall Complex

In NIT-Trichy, semester pattern is followed. So there is an end semester exam, at the end of a semester. Also for continuous assessment, there are Cycle tests every month and also Assignments/Projects. [A piece of advice: The portion for cycle tests will be a part of the entire syllabus. Scoring in Cycle tests, have proven to be a boost for you Grade Point Average. More about Grade Point Average later.]

Requisites when coming to the campus. Lab Uniforms (Khakhi Shirt and Pant, for both Boys and Girls). There is provision for it to be stitched in the campus itself. Lab Shoes (Black Shoes, not Sports shoes). Not available in campus. Can be bought from the city.

Laboratories

Also required for engineering drawing (which I am not sure is present for the 2009 batch) we will need drafter, instrument box, chart holder etc. The preferred calculator is Casio 991 MS or Casio 991 ES. These can be obtained from the campus or can be obtained at second hand rate from the seniors.

For purchases, a place called Chatram is preferred to the city, as there are umpteen number of book stalls, stationery, etc. It’s about half an hour by bus from the college.

For the first year students (engineering), who will be split among 10 (not sure of the number) sections, shall have their classes at the Central Lecture Hall Complex and not in their departments. Students of Architecture will have their classes at their Department. The preferred dress code is Shirts and Pants for Boys and Salwaar Kameez (ask girl seniors please!) for girls. The “Code of Conduct” is available in the Official Website for Download. The link to the college rules is here. I do not know how strict the officials are now, but I don’t remember following the rules, especially the dress code, for more than a week or so.

For extra curricular activities, it is mandatory for the student to join either National Cadets Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS) or NSO (National Service Organisation). Please bring your sports certificates if you are keen to join NSO.

INTERNET AND LIBRARY

Octagon

For facilities available on the LAN we have the Intranet Lab, called Octagon. For internet facilities there is the separate annex building. Entry requires ID card and also you log-in details, which might be made available to you in a month or so. Same goes with usage of computers at Octagon. There is at present a Library with greater density of Academics book. Internet access is available in Library too, but the number of computers is less. There is a Central Library under construction. Hope it is completed in time. (It’s time of completion was expected to be February 2008). There is also a Sports Center and Gymkhana.

CLUBS AND ASSOCIATIONS

There are umpteen number of Clubs and Associations formed by seniors and which are kept alive by inducting new members every year. At present, inductions for First Years are not permitted. And inductions shall be only in the second year. Some of the clubs in the campus are Rotaract Club, Wisdom Club, Leo Club, Dance Troupe of NITT, Music Troupe of NITT, Aayaam the Hindi Literary club, Tamil Mandram the Tamil Literary Club, Technical clubs like Delta, Spider and RMI – Robotics and Machine Intelligence. There is also a Karate Club.

RELIEF

We find relief and solace from the mess food and the sometimes maddening routine thanks to Icy the ice cream par lour, Juicy the juicy shop and Snacky the snacks shop. There is also a Buhari Veg and Non-Veg Canteen, a Shopping Centre, SBI Bank and ATM, Xerox shop, Stationery, Gurunath – a mini market catering to all essential Goodies. Gurunath is located behind the Coral Hostel, while the remaining are located closer to the staff quarters. And I shouldn’t leave out the Nescafe and Bru shops that are functional at Night and Day respectively.

First year boys are expected to be back in their hostels latest by 9.30 pm while Girls of all years are expected to be in their hostels before 9 pm. Delay will not be entertained. The time is extended to 10 pm on Saturday. (Last semester the time was 9 pm on Saturday, and 8 pm for the rest of the days.)

  • PRANAV P CHHEDA

well it was almost everything i wanted , but , what about the gadgets allowed?
i mean are 1st yr students allowed phones , laptops etc?

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

Yes, freshers are allowed to bring phones and laptops. You are permitted to have such gadgets in your hostels. But it is advised that you don’t bring laptops or desktops until second semester. There had been issues of thefts of mobiles in our hostels during our first years. So be careful.

Note that you are not permitted to bring your mobile phones to the academic region i.e. the Lecture Halls and Laboratories. You may have it in your hostels. Also note that these rules are strictly followed only during the first few months and later you can secretly bring your phones. Make sure you are a little careful and don’t get caught.

Thanks, I will add this also to the text!

  • vinod

hey great piece of information. but still i have 2 more questions.

    1) the campus being very large are bikes allowed for students?

    2) how to get more grade points?

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

I am glad to know that this page was helpful to you. I have answered your queries in the Questions you Asked! page. Please check that. (Search for your name: “Vinod”).

  • vinu

what special courses are offered in electrical and embedded based… subjects,.

  • vinod

thank you for your information. i will be joining this year at nit trichy (chem engg). could you please tell us about the fees structure. annualy how much we should spend for it?

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

Please check this pdf file to know about the fee structure.
    http://www.nitt.edu/home/fee.pdf
Great to know you will be joining Chemical Engineering. Welcome to the team!

  • Natasha

Could you please tell me about the girls hostel there? The facilities available? The dress code? How about jeans and t-shirts? are they allowed?

You said laptops are allowed. Can you get wireless internet connection there? :P

    Thanks.

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

I have replied to your email, hope that is helpful!

  • Priyank Jain

Can i get an internet connection in hostels if i bring my laptop ?

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

You are permitted to use USB Internet on your Laptop in hostels. If you expected to obtain an internet connection (via the college) in the hostel, I am sorry you will be disappointed. The Director is strictly against the AC – PC culture and doesn’t expect anyone to stay put in your rooms. The college doesn’t even provide LAN or even the college intranet in the hostels. You may set up a LAN for yourself in the hostel, but I don’t there will be a need to set up one.
Bring laptops in your second semester or second year. Use your time in the first semester to get comfortable with the new campus and making new friends, rather than in front of the computer.

  • Mani

Sir is there a possibility of branch change in nit trichy, if one performs well in the 1st year????

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

No you can’t. Branch change based on Grade Point Average was stopped in 2007 I think. Not just in NIT Trichy but in all NITs.

Update: My friend says that, this facility was stopped only in a few Institutes and not in All. The error is regretted.

  • http://akajereme.wordpress.com abhishek

dude .. it wasn’t stopped in all NITs.. just us and a few more like NIT surathkal n probably calicut too… thats all !

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

    Are you sure?
But for sure, it’s not there in NIT Trichy right!

  • mohnish

i am joining NITT-ECE this year.i want to know how the selection of NCC candidates are being done there? I am an holder of NCC ‘A’ certificate.

  • mohnish

does all the first year classes happens in the central lecture hall(the one shown in the picture above)?. or will we also have classes in our specified departments also?

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

Classes for all first years are handled in Central Lecture hall Complex (CLC). Your classes take place in the first floor. First years are grouped into Sections. This classification is made on a random basis.

No first years don’t have classes in departments as the syllabus for the first years is a common one. But you may have department specific subjects.

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

There used not to be a selection of NCC Candidates as the number of students opting for NCC used to be less. But last year there was an increase in students opting for it. Please come to the campus and you can get to know.

  • Lakshmi

Can u let me know da syllabus for architecture? Thanks

  • mohnish

    when is the sports time??/

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

Please check this page from the official website. Do check the pdf file available for download in the same page.

  • vinod

is it true that there will 4 per room in the 1st year hostals? but they also say that they will be opening a new hostel for the first years.

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

When we joined the college in 2007, we were four in a room. Come to the college and know for yourself! New hostel for first years? Well I believe only Agate, Coral and Diamond will be for first years. Please let me know the sourse of that info. Thanks.

  • Venkatesh

Your blog is really superb. I have 3 questions:

    1. Which is the best mess? And can we cook in our hostel rooms(not allowed according to rules, of course)?

    2. Is there ragging, and how to escape it?

    3. How to prepare for IITJEE-2010 in NIT-T? Will there be atleast some guys with me preparing for it? Is it possible to manage both college and JEE preparation, and how to schedule hours of study?

    And I am joining EEE.
Thanks in advance. Looking forward to a detailed reply.

  • Sidharth

This page proved very useful to me. Thanx! Also, I have a few question-

1)Could you upload photos of the hostel rooms?
2)Is it really a hectic life (like in IITs) in NITT?
3)Exactly how strict are they on a scale of 1-10 ? LOL just asking!

hey dude..ur blog is good man..so i wanted to ask is this laptop and gadget thing same in all NITS..i am a nepali…i will be joining NIT,Durgapur mech department this year…how urban is the scenario there..i meant how do people chill out at NITs…..

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

I am not really sure of how it is in NIT Durgapur. But it is always better to know of the surroundings you will be staying in. So it is better to take your laptop and gadgets (costly stuffs) in your second semester or second year, not in the first semester itself. :)

  • Pankaj

sir is eee in nit t good??

  • Abhilash

Excuse me,I feel completely out of depth here. You're all Engineering guys,I'm just an aspirant.I request your help.I am from Mumbai, but am a native Tamil.I'm getting probably anything in NITT,good disciplines in BITS Pilani and some M.Sc.s in IIT.Which should I take?Is NITT the Best NIT?I'm also getting a 35000 p.a. waiver from AIEEE Board. Is Trichy better than BITS?Please give unbiased opinion

  • Vmjamal

what are the highlights of nit trichy when compared to nit calicut?

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

Every course in NIT Trichy is good. What do you mean by good? Is it good faculty or curriculum or placement opportunities? Everything is good. Do you have it in you to be an Electrical Engineer? Just take it and go! Good Luck!

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

It's great to know that you have lot of options open to you! Well, follow your heart. That's what I will say. Don't become an Engineer because everyone asked you to. I don't know if NITT is the best NIT because I have never been to or interacted much with other NIT students. There are some good faculties (yes not all are good enough), good opportunities. And I don't know if NITT is better than BITS. I don't regret choosing NITT. I have loved every bit of it. Now am a final year student.

Ask yourself what you want to be. Then choose the discipline you want to go with. NITT has had very good placement stats.

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

Have never been to NIT Calicut, so can't comment on this. Sorry. But I believe, placements have been really good in NITT.

In NIT Durgapur, you can bring as many laptops and mobiles (any any other gadgets) you like. There is absolutely no restriction on bringing electrical/electronics equipment.
i have seen students bring even AIR-COOLERS (not joking).
All hostel rooms have ethernet ports for LAN and internet access.
You can carry your mobile to the class, but remember to keep it silent.

NIT Durgapur is located in the heart of the bustling Tier-II city of Durgapur. The City Centre, the shopping hub of the city, is within walking distance of the hostels. There are several shopping malls (with a multiplex and hypermarkets like Big Bazaar and Spencer's Hyper), including a huge mall called Shrachi Junction under construction.
There are several 3-star hotels – Rose Valley (formerly Ginger under Tata Group), Peerless Sarovar Portico and The Citi Residenci – with restaurants and cafes (if you can afford them). If not, you call go for one of the the less expensive restaurants (food is very good to average).
There are several parks to hang out in. Troika Park (in City Centre) has a lake with boating options and ropeways.
Recently, an amusement park is coming up in Durgapur.
An airport is under construction about 8 km from the NIT campus (closer than the railway station).

In your free time, most people either hang out in City Centre or play some multiplayer games (like Counter Strike or FIFA or Rise of Nations) on the LAN (an advantage of having two ethernet ports in each room). Or you can engage in some activities in any of the clubs. In fact, you can do anything you wish. No one's going to stop you unless you are irritating others.

Mechanical is the most lucrative stream in NIT Durgapur, as well as the largest in student and faculty strength. It is one of the top 10 mechanical engineering departments in India.

Hey, I am joining NITT as a PG student in Process Control and Instrumentation and have the following doubts.

    1. Is there wireless (or basically any) internet facility in the hostels?
    2. Which hostels may be allotted to the PG students?
3.I have read in the Institute site that the library is open 24X7. Is it true for the labs as well?

  • Arun5

how do you train students for placements?

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

    No it is not!

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

Sorry about the really late reply. I hope this reply will be helpful to people later visiting the site. At this point I believe you have taken a course at NIT Trichy. Faculty I would say is best for Chemical, Civil, ECE. Other depts there are good faculties, but I am not sure if i can say that they are the best.
Stop worrying about placement package, a lot can change in 4 years. You will never know. At the moment there is no internet connections in hostel rooms. And all three hostels are in good condition, diamond and agate I believe currently being the best.

what about B arch from nit trichy…..how is it quality wise…
what s % of north indian students..

  • http://openthoughts.me/blog jithinkr

B arch at nit trichy is good. students who have taken the course, do say that the work load is heavy and most of them work through out the night most days to complete design assignments. Am not aware of how the course is elsewhere, so can’t provide a comparision on quality.
